Salisbury steak has been a staple in most American homes. It is easy to make, delicious, and served with the most amazing gravy. Nowadays, the use of cream of chicken soup and dry au jus mix makes this gravy very easy.
You can add various ingredients to the meat to make it tastier, and this time we are using dry onion soup mix, Italian seasoning, and parsley.
Slow cooker Salisbury steak is so good because the meat comes out tender and juicy, and the gravy with just the right consistency.
Cooking with ground beef is easy and convenient. I use it to make other wonderful recipes like Cracker Barrel Meatloaf Recipe, Brown Gravy Meatloaf, similar to Salisbury steak, and one of my favorites, Best Taco Meatloaf.
Ingredients For Salisbury Steak
- Ground beef: I try to always buy lean beef (90% fat-free).
- Dry onion soup mix: has the right amount of salt and seasoning to flavor the meat with a delicious taste of onion, so you don’t have to use raw ones.
- Breadcrumbs: are what hold the meat and all other ingredients in the patties together.
- Italian seasoning: has the right blend of herbs like oregano, basil, marjoram, thyme, rosemary, and sage.
- Milk provides moisture so that the patties will be tender and juicy.
- Dry parsley: gives the meat those perfect little specks of green and is a great herb to add to any meal.
- Vegetable oil: is better for frying than olive oil, which is best eaten raw in salads.
- Condensed cream of chicken soup: is a wonderful baser for any sauce or casserole.
- Au jus mix: au jus means “in its juices,” so au jus mix is used when you want to make a sauce that resembles the one you would get using the juices of cooked meat.
- Onions: sliced onions slow-cooked to perfection, mix with the sauce and come out tasting amazing.
- Mushrooms: I love using mini shiitake mushrooms. They look amazing and taste delicious.

What To Serve with Salisbury Steak?
Potatoes! I love Patatas Bravas. They are crispy fried and full of spicy flavor!
Dipped in the most delicious spicy sauce. I also love to serve it with Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes or with Roasted Potatoes and Carrots, and this way, I feel good about giving my family veggies.
Another amazing potato recipe is Mexican Potatoes. They are also fried to crispy perfection and full of Mexican spices like oregano, cumin, garlic, chili powder, and surprisingly enough, cinnamon. They are just bursting with flavor!
Can I Freeze Salisbury Steak?
You can. Place patties and gravy inside an airtight container, label it with the date and freeze it for up to 4 months.
Recipe tips
- I can’t stress enough the fact that you don’t have to overwork the meat. If you do, the patties will become tough.
- When making the gravy, use a whisk. Lumps are likely to form, and lumpy gravy is not good.
- Don’t skip the browning of the patties. Browning helps develop flavors that otherwise won’t be present in the steak.
