How to make runza casserole?
- The first step is to prepare the dough.
- Divide it into two parts, grease the baking dish with oil and lay out a layer of dough.
- Bake in the oven for 7 minutes. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a pan and fry the minced meat.
- Fry for about 4 minutes, constantly stirring with a spatula.
- Add chopped onions, salt, and pepper.
- Then add the chopped zucchini, cover, and simmer.
- Spread the whole filling on the dough.
- Sprinkle with grated mozzarella and cover with a second sheet of dough.
- Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes and serve.

- Add chopped onions to the sautéed minced meat. Mix and cook for 2 minutes over medium heat until the onions soften.
- Cut the zucchini into a small cube, add to the pan. Mix, cover, and simmer for 4-5 minutes.
- Drain the excess liquid from the pan, salt, pepper and mix everything.
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease the baking dish with oil and line it with one sheet of dough. You can roll out the dough a little wider than your shape and make small sides. So the casserole will keep in shape.
- Bake the dough in the oven for about 7 minutes. Then put a mixture of minced meat and vegetables on top of the dough.
- Grate mozzarella and sprinkle on top.
- Put the second layer of dough on the casserole, cover with a sheet of foil and bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes. 10 minutes before the end of cooking, remove the foil so that the crust can brown.
Preparation Tips to make Perfect Runza Casserole:
– You can add your favorite vegetables to this casserole. For example carrots, blanched tomatoes, cabbage, or eggplant.
– Add your favorite cheese. Use Parmesan, Cheddar, or Gouda.
– To make the crust of the casserole golden, grease it before baking with butter or a beaten egg.
How to cook the dough for runza casserole on your own?
- Mix 200ml sour cream and 2 eggs.
- Add 100g of melted butter and a pinch of salt. Sift 300g flour, 2 tsp. baking powder and mix everything. Knead the soft and supple dough.
- Wrap in cling film and let it rest in the refrigerator for an hour.
- After cooling, divide the dough into 2 parts and roll to the desired size.
- The thickness of the dough sheet should be approximately 0.2 inches. This dough is ideal for any meat and vegetable pies and casseroles.
How to store runza casserole?
Such a casserole is perfectly stored in the refrigerator for almost 5 days. Fold it in an airtight container with a lid or cover your dish with cling film. Besides, you can freeze the runza casserole. Pack it in a container, wrap in foil, and store in the freezer for up to six months. Let the casserole thaw a little before serving.
