Do you remember when your grandma used to make her famous custard pie? You could smell it baking in the oven and you just couldn’t wait to dig in. Well, this doesn’t have to be just a memory anymore, and you don’t have to rely on grandma to do it. You can now make it on your own!
Ready in less than 1 hour, and using ingredients you likely already have on hand in your fridge and pantry, this easy, and super creamy Old Fashioned Custard Pie will impress friends, guests, and most importantly, grandma.
YOU WILL NEED:
- 1 unbaked pie shell
- 3 large eggs
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp nutmeg
- 2-2/3 cups milk
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
How do you make Custard Pie from scratch?
Follow the instructions listed below, and be sure to read through the “Pro Tips” to get the best results.
- Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Step 2: In a medium-sized bowl, using a hand mixer or whisk, beat the eggs slightly. Add in sugar, salt, nutmeg, milk, and vanilla and beat well until combined (mixture will be somewhat thin).
- Step 3: Carefully pour the mixture into the unbaked pie shell and bake for 35-40 minutes.
- Step 5: Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely to room temperature.
- Step 6: Sprinkle the top of the fully cooled pie with nutmeg, slice, and serve.
Recipe tips:
- To ensure a beautifully browned crust, try brushing egg wash on the crust edges prior to baking (beat 1 egg with 1 tbsp milk, then brush onto crust edges)
- Although it’s tempting, do not open the oven before the baking time is up. This allows heat to escape and can impact the finished product
- Don’t have freshly ground nutmeg on hand? Already ground will work just fine in this recipe.
Why does my Old Fashioned Custard Pie get watery?
The key to avoiding a watery custard pie is to ensure the proper baking time. The pie should have a slight “jiggle” when finished baking and will firm up as it cools.
Also, ensure that all ingredients are well mixed together well to avoid separation of the eggs and milk. Because nobody likes a watery pie!
Can you freeze Old Fashioned Custard Pie?
This pie freezes very well, making it a great make-ahead dessert. Simply cool the pie completely, cover with plastic wrap and freeze for up to 3 months. Remove from the freezer prior to serving, let it come to room temperature, and serve.
