Now that berries are in season, I am so thrilled to be able to cook with them. I love berry desserts and blackberries are one of my favorites. They are sweet but have a bit of a tang and that makes them perfect for cobbler. Craving more delicious easy desserts? You simply have to try our caramel apple pecan cobbler & peach cobbler!
Blackberry Cobbler
I even added a bit more tang using orange zest and loved the results. Cobblers are really so easy and fast to make and you can get creative and use your favorite flavor combinations.
You can do a mixed berry cobbler, or add lemon zest, vanilla, cinnamon, your imagination is the limit.
There is nothing quite like having a bite of still warm berry cobbler with a big scoop of your favorite ice cream, or just a drizzle of cream.
Cobblers are one of my family’s favorite desserts and I love making them. Easy, fast, and delicious!
BLACKBERRY COBBLER INGREDIENTS:
- Blackberries: look for plump big ones. They are the sweetest. We are using 2 ½ cups.
- Sugar: this recipe calls for a cup of sugar, but you can take it down to 1/2 cup easily.
- Orange zest: I just love the orangeberry combo. You can skip it if you want, or add lemon zest instead. I used 2 teaspoons of orange zest.
- All-purpose flour: I wouldn’t recommend using whole wheat flour for cobblers. You could use self-rising or cake flour, but all-purpose works just fine. One cup is all you need for this recipe.
- Baking powder: add 2 teaspoons if you are using all-purpose flour. If you are using self-rising flour, don’t add baking powder.
- Salt: just ½ tsp is needed. Salt enhances the flavor of the berries, but you just need to add a tiny bit. It should be undetectable.
- Milk: I used whole milk. You can use any other plant-based milk if you like, or reduced-fat milk. I just think the texture and flavor are better with whole milk. You will need one cup.
- Butter: ½ cup or one stick is what you need. If you want to make a vegan version, you can substitute butter with a light-tasting oil 1:1.
HOW TO MAKE BLACKBERRY COBBLER?
- Mix the blackberries, sugar, and orange zest in a small bowl. Let stand for 20 minutes until syrupy
- Preheat the oven to 375 F. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, melted butter, and milk.
- Pour the batter into an ungreased 8-inch square baking dish
- Spoon the berry mixture on top and bake for 40-50 minutes until golden brown.
CAN YOU MAKE BLACKBERRY COBBLER WITH FROZEN BERRIES?
Yes, you can. You can either use fresh or frozen blackberries. No need to thaw them, since you have to let them sit for 20 minutes with the sugar anyway.
CAN YOU MAKE A BLACKBERRY COBBLER AHEAD OF TIME?
You sure can. You can make it up to step 4 the night before, cover with plastic wrap, refrigerate it and bake it the next day.
HOW TO STORE LEFTOVER BLACKBERRY COBBLER?
You can keep blackberry cobbler out at room temperature for up to 12 hours.
You have to refrigerate it after that time. I like to refrigerate my leftover cobbler right away.
Cover leftovers with plastic wrap or place them in an airtight container before refrigerating them to prevent them from drying up. They keep for up to 3 days in the fridge.

Absolutely love this! I have made it three times now in one week. It is super easy and delicious! My husband is not even a fan of blackberries but he has eaten it every single night with vanilla ice cream. I am going to try this with different fruit in the future. I think this is a perfect go to for any cobbler. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe!😊
This recipe was wonderful! I used 1.5 tsp of lemon zest and a couple shakes of cinnamon and it was divine! I also was out of milk so I used canned coconut milk and we all loved it!
