How to make Banana Bread Brownies?
- Preheat the oven to 375°F. In a mixing bowl, mix together 1 ½ cups sugar, 1 cup sour cream, 1 stick (½ cup) softened butter, and 2 eggs using an electric mixer. Beat until well combined. Add 3 mashed bananas and 2 tsp vanilla extract to the batter. Mix until combined.
- Add the dry ingredients (2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 tsp baking soda, ¾ tsp salt) to the batter. Mix until combined.
- Stir in ½ cup chopped walnuts.
- Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray. Then, pour the banana batter into the prepared baking pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-30 minutes or until ready. Check the readiness of the Banana Bread Brownies using a toothpick inserted in the center, if it comes out clean – the brownies are ready. Remove the baking pan from the oven. Let it cool slightly.
- While the brownies are cooling, prepare the frosting. In a saucepan, melt 1 stick (½ cup) butter and heat until medium brown color. Turn off the heat and add 3 cups powdered sugar (1 cup at a time), stir until combined after each addition. Then, add 3 tbsp milk and 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract. Mix until combined.
- Pour the frosting over the brownies. Spread evenly. Let the banana bread brownies cool completely. Then cut and serve. Enjoy!
How long should you let banana bread brownies cool?
You just need to let the banana bread brownies cool a little so they aren’t hot, but warm.
Then you can pour the frosting over the top of the banana bread brownies and let them cool completely before cutting.
Usually, it takes about one or two hours. I prefer to let the banana bread brownies cool overnight.

Amazing and so flavorful!!! I have been looking for a better banana bread recipe and found it! It checks all the boxes – easy to make, so moist and tastes great! This is definitely a keeper receipe!
Thanks for sharing
Very good. May omit walnuts and try a few chocolate chips for grandson.
DELICIOUS!!! So moist and bouncy. I made mine lactose free using oat milk and vegan butter. I didn’t have any walnuts so I used vegan coconut chocolate coverts. It was absolutely divine. Added to my list of easy baking 🙂
I cut the powdered sugar in half for the frosting and really brown the butter which makes it a more caramel frosting. I get more compliments on this receipt than anything I’ve ever made!
Made this and it is absolutely delicious 😋 will definitely be making again.
Can I use applesauce instead of sour cream?
Amazing recipe. Added some chocolate chips. A new family favourite,
Liked the flavor of this. It turned out more like a cake than brownies. I also only used 2 cups of powdered sugar.
Excellent recipe .. thank you for sharing. I doubled the recipe so I can freeze some for hubby. From the double batch I yielded 3 brownie pans, 1 loaf pan & 7 muffins. They are delicious, especially when they are warm from the oven, to die for lol. My hubby loves them too so I’m glad I doubled everything. I’m not sure they’ll make it to freezer camp .. we’ll see.
Absolutely delicious!! I am wondering if/how the recipe could be converted for actual banana bread.
These are delicious! The icing is way too sweet for me, but I do not like super sugary icing. I think I might do a cream cheese frosting next time.
That’s what I did! I only did one cup of sugar in the batter and then I did two cups of powdered sugar and about 1/4 cup of cream cheese for the frosting. The brown butter really made this delicious!
First time baking the banana bread brownies. My sister couldn’t wait for it to cool. She loves it.
These are now a ‘staple’ in my house….we ‘save’ bananas to ‘cure’ just to make this. My household is not a fan of brownie icing, so I omit that step
I made this just as the recipe reads. It was amazing. My family is wowed!! Thank you
I made this for my dinner date last night and he loved it! He said it was the best thing he has tasted. I loved it as well! Then my daughter came home with her friends and they almost ate the whole pan! It was perfect and I made no substitutions.
Amazing recipe!
Love the frosting; I also only did 2 cups of confectionery sugar;
This is my 5th time making these banana brownie recipe. To die for. My family and church were raving about them. I’m making some as I write this review for church tomorrow for mothers day. thx u for teaching a beginner how to bake. Ultimate favorite recipe
This was outstanding. I did substitute pecans for walnuts but I loved this better than banana bread every day of the week. I even made it for a friend who loves bananas and he called to tell me it was delicious. So thank you. A new favorite. 💜
I made these and brought them to work, everyone loved them exactly as the recipe was written.
Thank you for sharing
We really liked the banana bread. Next time I will only use 2 cups of powdered sugar, 3 was too sweet for me. Good brownies/bread though!
Easy and delicious! I used a can of cream cheese frosting for convenience.
I made this recipe and it was fabulous my dog ,even jumped on the counter and ate the whole cake without breaking my pan, and by just pulling the tin foil strategically over! And having a ball, will make again and only store in the oven🐾🐾😢
How wonderful, Janet! So glad you decided to give it a try!

Got up early and made this recipe up this morning absolutely amazing It is very moist and delicious, it has just the right amount of nuts and makes a nice big amount. I only used one Cup of brown sugar and in the frosting I could only fit 2 cups of powdered sugar but the flavor is sweet and delicious very far superior over any kind of banana bread I’ve ever had or banana cake I’ve ever had I followed the recipe as best I could but I just tried to cut out some of the sugar and it turned out perfect and delicious thank you

This was so easy to make. Used less sugar. Used over ripe bananas, Very moist. The icing piece is what makes this brownie which is more like bread.
Don’t skip the icing!
Thanks for the suggestions Linda. So glad you decided to try it again and customize it to your liking. 🙂
Everyone loves these!!
