Sometimes when you make a dessert, you want it to be extra, extra special. Cookie bars with 2-3 layers are great, but ones that have 7-layers are even better. Introducing, the 7-layer bar.
Don’t let the seven layers intimidate you – this recipe has quite a bit of versatility. If you are craving a little bit of extra white chocolate today, add it in, if you want walnuts instead of pecans, go for it.
The options in this recipe are endless really. Follow the recipe below, and make sure to read through the “Pro Tips” to create the best 7-layer bars.
7-LAYER BARS INGREDIENTS:
- 1 ½ cups graham cracker crumbs (either pre-made crumbs or pulse 10 whole graham crackers in a food processor to make your own crumbs).
- 10 tablespoons salted butter, melted.
- 1 cup of chocolate chips (semi-sweet works best).
- ½ cup white chocolate chips.
- ½ cup butterscotch chips.
- ½ cup chopped pecans.
- 1 14 ounces can sweeten condensed milk.
- 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut.
HOW TO MAKE 7-LAYER BARS FROM SCRATCH?
- Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Step 2: Prepare a 9×13” baking pan by lining it with parchment paper. Lightly grease the parchment paper with cooking spray and set aside.
- Step 3: Combine graham cracker crumbs and melted butter in a medium-sized bowl. Use a fork to mix well.
- Step 4: Press graham cracker crumb mixture firmly into prepared pan creating one even layer (you can use a fork or the back of a measuring cup to help with this).
- Step 5: Sprinkle chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, and pecans over the graham cracker layer.
- Step 6: Carefully pour sweetened condensed milk over top of chocolate chip mixture.
- Step 7: Sprinkle an even layer of shredded coconut over top.
- Step 8: Bake in preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the top starts to brown and caramelize.
- Step 9: Let cool in the pan completely. Cut with a sharp knife into squares and serve.
RECIPE TIPS;
- To get the perfect square-shaped bars, let the pan cool completely to room temperature, then throw it in the fridge for about 30 minutes before slicing
- Get creative with your toppings! If you’re not a fan of one of the seven layers listed, make your own! Add in pretzels, candy, or dried fruit to customize it to your taste buds.
- This is a great recipe to make with your kids. Get them involved in the kitchen by picking their favorite add-ins and mixing ingredients.
DO 7 LAYER BARS NEED TO BE REFRIGERATED?
These bars do not need to be refrigerated, but I do prefer to eat them when they’re a little bit cold. I find they hold together better and get extra chewy when chilled
HOW TO KEEP 7 LAYER BARS FROM STICKING TO THE PAN?
The key to preventing any baking from sticking to the pan is to prep your pan first. For this recipe I like to lightly grease my pan, line it with parchment paper, then lightly grease the pan again.
HOW TO STORE 7 LAYER BARS?
These bars can be stored in an air-tight container at room temperature for 3-4 days, or in the fridge for up to 5 days. If frozen, these bars will keep for up to 3 months.
