HOW TO MAKE PAN FRIED BREAD?

  1. Add 2 cups self-rising flour and ½ stick of cold butter to the large bowl. Press butter into the flour using a pastry blender or a fork until it turns into a crumb consistency.
  2. Then, slowly pour cold buttermilk in a few additions. Mix using a spatula after each addition. The dough should be shaggy. Don’t add the remaining buttermilk if the dough is already shaggy.
  3. Dust a work surface with all-purpose flour and place the dough on it. Sprinkle with a little amount of flour and shape the dough into a disc.
  4. Flip the dough, add more flour if needed, and shape into the bigger disc (the size should be similar or a little smaller than the bottom of a cast-iron skillet).
  5. Melt 2 tsp of bacon grease in a 9-inch cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat.
  6. Transfer the disc of the dough to the skillet. Reduce the heat to low. Cover with a lid and cook until the bottom of the homemade biscuit bread browned.
  7. Turn it over and add 1 tbsp of melted butter, if needed. Cover and cook until golden brown on the other side. Enjoy with jam, butter, honey, or maple syrup.

WHICH FLOUR IS GOOD FOR OLD FASHIONED BISCUIT BREAD?

The best choice for this frying pan bread is self-rising flour. But if you don’t have it, you can make homemade self-rising flour.

Mix together 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour, 1 tbsp baking powder, and ½ tsp salt.

TIPS FOR MAKING OLD FASHIONED BISCUIT BREAD

  • Don’t add too much flour while shaping the dough.
  • Don’t add more buttermilk if the dough is already shaggy.
  • You can use vegetable shortening instead of bacon grease.
